Applied Probability and Statistics- Stat 400-0201 -Summer II, 2008

Prerequisite: MATH 140-141.

Textbook:   "Probability and Statistics for Engineering and the Sciences", by Jay L. Devore, 7th edition, (ISBN: 978-0-4-9540049-3).

Syllabus: We will cover most of Chapters 1-8 of the text. (We will skip parts of Chapter 1; a few probability distributions; most of 4.6; 7.4; and 8.3. We'll also cover some topics superficially.) We will also study the Law of Large Numbers.

Homework and Examinations: There will be two homework assignments due per week. In addition I will be given a quiz each week during the term. No late homework will be accepted, and there will be no makeup quizzes. It is OK to work on the problem sets in cooperation with others, but you must write up the solutions by yourself. In addition to the weekly homework assignments and quiz, there will be two (in class) midterm exams and a final exam .
The tentative schedule for the exams is:
Exam 1: Monday, July 28.

Exam 2: Tuesday, August 12.

Final: Friday, August 22

Grading: Tentatively, letter grades will be based on your accumulated points at the end of the semester, according to the following scheme: 90%-A; 80%-B; 70%-C; 50%-D.

NOTE: The two lowest homework grades as well as the lowest quiz grade will be dropped.

Attendance and absences : You are responsible for the material covered in class, whether you attend or not. You are also responsible for the announcements made during class; they may include changes in the syllabus.
