Primary Duties of the Senior Associate Dean
Here is a list of some of the main duties of the
Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Research, and Graduate
Education. The Senior Associate Dean:
- supervises and administers the APT (Appointments,
Promotions and Tenure) process in the College.
- reviews and approves all research grant proposals
emanating from CMPS staff, before they are forwarded to ORAA, the university
grants office; helps to identify funding opportunities for CMPS faculty.
- is the chief equity officer for the College.
- acts as a resource for graduate students in the College,
and assists departments in such matters as graduate student
recruitment, orientation, advising, training, retention, and
placement.
- supervises the unit review and chair review processes in the College.
- provides accurate and timely advice, counsel, assistance and information to the Dean.
- stands in for the Dean when needed.
- helps to coordinate the meetings and workings of the Administrative Council.
- helps the Dean to coordinate various College outreach efforts.
- is responsible for overall management of CMPS facilities;
supervises the College's Director of Facilities.
- coordinates the College's post-tenure review and teaching
evaluation processes, as well as faculty outside professional
activities and faculty workload reports.
- is responsible for the documentation of the College's plan of
organization, strategic plan, and other policies and procedures.
- tracks nominations and selections of faculty for national awards
and prizes; maintains rosters of awards and prizes for which faculty
are eligible.
- acts as the chief IT officer in the College; supervises the
College's Technology Officer.
- collects and presents data pertinent to College operations.
- coordinates various searches carried out in the College.
- represents the College on various campus-wide committees.
- does ARS approvals for the College's faculty appointments.
- acts as an informal mentor for junior faculty in the College;
runs the Associate Dean's Junior Faculty Seminar Series.
- assists the Dean to develop and maintain external research
partnerships and ventures.
- acts as the College point person in high profile College
publicity efforts (lab tours, scientific presentations to donors,
special events for dignitaries).
