Math Department Graduate Admissions

About Us

If you are considering applying to our Mathematics graduate program, here are some links on our www site you may want to read. See general information for an introduction to our graduate programs. If you are interested in the interdisciplinary program in Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computation, visit the AMSC website. If you are interested in the Statistics Program, visit the STAT website. The official graduate catalog descriptions of our three programs, including a list of faculty and admission requirements and deadlines, are given in sites for the three programs MATH, AMSC, and STAT. Lots of additional information is available from the graduate program home page. For more information, you may contact us at mathgrad@deans.umd.edu. Effective Fall 2005, the department will also be launching a professional Masters program in Mathematics of Advanced Industrial Technology (MAIT).

About Financial Aid

A large fraction of our students receive some form of financial aid, through fellowships, Teaching Assistantships, and Research Assistantships. The graduate school also provides some graduate assistant positions , but most of our student support is administered by the mathematics department. Competition for this support is strong and we able to fund only the best applicants. Generally, students applying only for a master's degree will not qualify for financial aid. For information about financial aid administered by the Mathematics Department, send e-mail to mathgrad@deans.umd.edu with your questions or requests. Some financial aid administered by the department comes from Federal grants and is restricted to US citizens and permanent residents. For that reason, we unfortunately cannot support many foreign students.

Note: Foreign applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), and are strongly recommended to take the TSE (Test of Spoken English) as well. See here for the university's English proficiency requirement (scroll down the page). International applicants who are candidates for teaching assistantships are expected to have demonstrated fluency in English, and, when they arrive on campus, must pass the International Teaching Assistants Evaluation before they are eligible to teach.

How to Apply

The Application

To apply, go to the Graduate School Admissions page where you can fill out the online application form. The program code for mathematics is MATH , for statistics is STAT, and for applied mathematics is AMSC. There is a nonrefundable application fee of $60. After your application has been registered by the system, you will receive a request to submit additional information about your advanced courses and an application for financial aid (teaching assistantship or fellowship).

Transcripts and GRE scores

You must have official transcripts of your undergraduate work and GRE (Graduate Record Exam) scores sent to the graduate school. Both the General GRE and the subject test in Mathematics are required, though we sometimes waive the requirement of the subject test if there is some reason why you can't take it. For requirements which apply only to international applicants, please see the international students website.

Letters of Recommendation

When you receive the request for additional information, you will be asked to enter the names of your letter writers again. They will then receive an email asking them to submit a letter of recommendation on line. The Graduate School strongly encourages your letter writers to submit their recommendations on line. However, if your recommender prefers to send a paper letter, the letter form, and the address to which it should be sent can be found on the admissions page of the Graduate School web site.

Deadlines

Applications for financial aid are only processed once a year, for admission for the fall semester.

Fall Semester: The deadline for best consideration is January 15.
February 1 is the university-imposed deadline for foreign students applying for fall (under F = Student or J = Exchange Visitor visas). For domestic students applying for fall (without financial aid), the deadline is May 1.

Spring Semester: For foreign students, the deadline is June 1
For domestic students applying for spring admission (without financial aid), the deadline is October 1 (September 15 preferred)

The earlier deadlines for foreign students are due to the extra time it takes to process the paperwork for a US visa .
