We will present some of the recent progresses on shock wave theory. The
   stability of Navier-Stokes shocks and positivity of Boltzmann shocks are
   among the topics to be discussed. The talk will start with basics on
   hyperbolic conservation laws and then proceed with the recent stability
   analysis for dissipative physical systems.
