Student Dynamics Seminar and Research Interaction Team

Meeting Time: 2 – 4 PM Tuesdays

Room: 1308 Math Building

Orgainzers: Paul Wright and Nick Long

Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Dmitry Dolgopyat

This semester we are doing a split program. One hour will be devoted to students giving general research talks on topics of their choice.

The second hour will be devoted to an RIT on Outer Billiards and will be run by Dmitry Dolgopyat and Giovanni Forni.

Dynamics of interacting billiard particles:
We consider a system of two particles one light and one heavy
moiving in a contained with concave boundaries. Assuming that
the heavy particle is initially at read we show that its motion
properly rescaled converges to (time inhomogeneous) Brownian Motion.
We use this simple system to illustrate a general approach to
deriving macroscopic equations from microscopic laws.
