Submission Guidelines
For a PDF of this document click here.The aim of this portion of the competition is to encourage graduate students to write material for a general scientific audience. You will be judged on the quality of the writing and not on the mathematical content.
Judging Criteria
- Clarity of exposition
- Is the main idea of the document clear from the beginning?
- Do the proofs in the document aid in the understanding the central idea?
- Appropriateness of level
- Could someone in a nontechnical field understand at least the main idea of the document?
- Could someone in an unrelated technical field understand the document
- Presentation
- Does the writer present the material as interesting and exciting?
Examples of appropriate material
- Introductory material from a paper you are writing.
- A proof of an interesting theorem, complete with a discussion of why it is important.
- A short history of your field.
- Your research statement from a job application.
- A summary of your undergraduate thesis.
In general, very technical documents or journal articles will not be appropriate for a general audience and will not be considered.
Format
- Abstracts may be submitted in any convenient format.
- Complete documents should be submitted in LaTeX, and PDF file formats. A template file is available here.
- Papers should be no longer than 4 pages plus figures.
Deadlines
- Abstracts are due by January 15th, 2010.
- Complete documents are due by February 12th, 2010.
