Summer Institute in Mathematics for Undergraduates
SIMU is a wonderful summer mathematics opportunity for
undergraduates. It is particularly
oriented to Hispanic/Latino and Native
American undergraduates. In Summer 2002, twenty-four students will
participate in 6 weeks of mathematics
in Puerto Rico, with travel and room and
board paid, AND with a $2200 stipend. Incredible.
The application deadline is in February 2002.

For local help, see your friendly UMCP math advisor Kim Ozga in
the Mathematics Department (Room 1115, ozga@math.umd.edu).
Lastly, Brian Rodas was a SIMU alum and graduate student here at
UMCP, now an instructor. Below is a copy of his December 2001 email
response to a query on his experience with SIMU.

Dr. Boyle,
Here is what I thought of SIMU(Summer Institute of Mathematics for
Undergraduates):
SIMU changed my life in many positive ways. After my junior year, I hadn't
plan on going to graduate school and was not seeing anything in math that
really interested me. Then the summer before my senior year I
participated in the SIMU program where I did reasearch in Computational
Algebraic Geometry. Not only did I love the math and the research aspect,
but I was encouraged to apply to graduate school. The program gave me all
the necessary information and answered a lot of my questions on graduate
school. I made lots of friends there who loved math very much and had
goals of pursuing careers in mathematics. It was a dream come true, not
to mention the program was in beautiful Puerto Rico. The research I did
there, Grobner Bases, interested me so much that I decided to continue it
here at the University of Maryland where I ultimately got my master's. I
am eternally grateful to SIMU for being instrumental in my becoming a
mathematician.
I could say a lot more but I don't know how much room you have for my
text. Again let students contact me if they want more information on the
program.
Brian
