Course Description: A graduate introduction to abstract algebra, Part II. We shall cover Chapters 10-14. Topics for this semester are rings, factorization (number theory), modules, categories, extensions, fields, Galois theory.
Format of the Course: Assigned homework will be due,
and
handed in, on Tuesdays. See the homework schedule below. The first
homework
is due on Tuesday February 5.
There will be three tests (see the schedule below)
including
the final exam. The first two will be in-class (on March 12/14th and
April 18th) and the final will be
on May 21st (as per the official schedule).
There are no makeups for tests, and late homework is not
accepted.
With a valid excuse, you may substitute one-half of your grade
on
the final for a test grade.
