Syllabus. This basic year long
course will cover the fundamental notions of groups, rings and modules. It is
aimed
at students beginning a
career in number theory, algebraic geometry, representation theory.
Tentative plan for this semester: After a quick review
of the material in chapters1 and 2, we will cover most of chapters 3,4,5 (Groups)
and then move on to
rings (chapters 7-9) and move on to modules (parts of chapter 10, 11, 12).
Grades. Two midterms (25% each) + Homework (20%) and Final Exam (30%).
Tests and homeworks. There will be two
50-minute in-class midterm exams, tentatively on 9/28 and 11/16. There will be
a written final exam.
There
will be weekly homeworks due Mondays which will be
graded. These homeworks are due at the beginning of
class.
The
lowest two homework grades will be dropped.
The
final will be cumulative with an emphasis on material covered since the second
midterm exam.
Make-up exams will only be given for compelling and documented reasons.
Office Hours: TBA or by appointment.
