This is a course in Probability designed for non-majors. We will take a functional approach to the material: the emphasis will be on problem solving using techniques from Probability. Thus you should expect to spend at least an hour each day working problems outside of class, in addition to time spent reading and reviewing the material. The primary text for the course is S. T. Tan's book Finite Mathematics, with additional materials available on reserve in the EPSL Library.
|
Grades: Your grade for the course will depend on your score on quizzes and exams. While homework will not be graded, discussion of problems (worked outside of class) will take up much of our time in class, and exams and quizzes will be based on the homework. The quiz/exam schedule is as follows:
| Tue | 6/3 | QUIZ |
| Thu | 6/5 | QUIZ |
| Mon | 6/9 | QUIZ |
| Wed | 6/11 | QUIZ |
| Fri | 6/13 | EXAM |
| Tue | 6/17 | QUIZ |
| Thu | 6/19 | QUIZ |
| Mon | 6/23 | QUIZ |
| Wed | 6/25 | QUIZ |
| Fri | 6/27 | EXAM |
| Tue | 7/1 | QUIZ |
| Thu | 7/3 | QUIZ |
| Mon | 7/7 | QUIZ |
| Wed | 7/9 | QUIZ |
| Fri | 7/11 | EXAM |
Each exam is worth 100 points. Each quiz is worth 10 points, and you can accumulate up to 100 points from quizzes, for a course total of 400 points. Course grades will be determined as follows:
| 360 points or more | = A |
| 320 - 359 points | = B |
| 280 - 319 points | = C |
| 240 - 279 points | = D |
| less than 240 points | = F |
|
Makeup Policy: No makeups will be given for quizzes. [However, since there are twelve quizzes given, you can miss two and still earn the full 100 quiz points.] Missed exams may be made up, subject to the following conditions:
- Proof that the exam was missed due to "illness of the student, or illness of a dependent as defined by Board of Regents policy on family and medical leave; religious observance (where the nature of the observance prevents the student from being present during the class period); participation in university activities at the request of University authorities; or compelling circumstance beyond the student's control" must be provided.
- The instructor must be notified as soon as possible. [My cell phone # is 301-257-4127.]
- Only one make-up will be given for each exam, so if multiple people miss an exam, you must come up with a mutually agreeable time to schedule the make-up.
