In celebration of his 70th birthday and his retirement from the faculty of the Department of Mathematics at Stanford University the former students of Don Ornstein will host a celebration, sponsored by the Department of Mathematics at Stanford.  This event will be held at Stanford on July 20-22, a Tuesday through Thursday.  Events will begin Tuesday evening with registration and light snacks in 382-T (the lounge of the Math. Dept. on the 2nd floor)

A series of talks will be given on Wednesday and Thursday on the major contributions Don has made to mathematics over his long and continuing career.
A tentative schedule of talks and events is available.  All talks will be in room 380-C of Building 380 (the Mathematics Department).  By limiting the number of talks to three per day we will have plenty of time for casual conversations and discussion.  A banquet on Thursday evening will provide us all with an opportunity to share stories and  experiences.   Do plan to share your favorite stories at this time.  Here is our current list of people who have indicated their intention to attend.   Please let us know of any additions or corrections we should make to this list.

Shari Ornstein has shared some pictures with us that we believe set the mood for the event.  If anyone else has digital photos they would like to share, send them.

As further details of this celebration fall into place we will update this webpage.

Housing will be available in the dormitories at Stanford.  For those wishing to stay in a local hotel, the Stanford Math Department has a listing of local accommodations.  Further information on obtaining housing in the dormitories is available.  Please make your accomodations soon as the summer is expected to be quite crowed

If you are interested in attending please contact Doug Lind so that we are sure to get you on our list.

A .pdf version of this announcement that prints as a 8.5x11 poster can be downloaded.

Banquet

On Thursday evening, July 22nd, there will be a banquet at Stanford Park Hotel, just across from the Stanford Shopping Center. The cost is $50/person (it's actually more, we thank the Stanford Mathematics Department for partially subsidizing this). There will be a social hour from 6pm to 7pm in the foyer outside the dining room, dinner at 7pm, and opportunities for sharing personal reminiscences after dinner (of which we hope there are many!). Many of
Don's family and Stanford friends will be there as well and all are heartily welcome. Please join us as we celebrate this special event in Don's life and career.

Right now it's VERY IMPORTANT to sign up for the banquet if you will be there. The sign-up deadline is JULY
12TH (but why not do it now?). You can do this easily and quickly at the web site

http://math.stanford.edu/ornstein.html

We need an accurate count for the hotel. We'll collect money when you're at Stanford. You MUST sign up to reserve a place at the banquet.

Dormitory housing at Stanford:

Studio apartments are NOT available as they have a minimum stay of 2 weeks.

Single or shared rooms are available in a campus residence while you are attending the Ornstein Fest. It will be about a 15 minute walk to the math department. Bathrooms are shared with other guests of the same gender.

There is no air conditioning. The single occupancy rate is $50.75/night, and the shared rate is $36.75/night per person.  For more information and to apply, go to  http://www.stanford.edu/dept/hds/scs/individuals/index.html.

Please review the housing features and policies. To apply, click on Ornstein Fest listed  in the Application Procedures section. Enter the password 448sk, fill out and submit the application and deposit form. Applications must be received before your arrival on campus. As housing is very tight this summer, we will not be able to accommodate anyone who has not made their arrangements in advance.

Contact Susan Muroshige at the Conference Services office if you have any
questions. Her contact information is 650-725-1429,
