This is an advanced topics course, following Roger Carter's book Finite Groups of Lie Type: Conjugacy Classes and Complex Characters.

Unfortunately this book is out of print, and no longer available from a print on demand service. If anyone can find where to get copies of the book let me know. In the worst case I'll copy or scan it and make it available.

Change in plans: I'll be using Representations of Finite Groups of Lie Type by Francois Digne and Jean Michel. This is available in paperback for $45. I'll use Carter as a supplementary reference.

The course requires some familiarity with algebraic groups and algebraic geometry. I'll try to cover what is needed. A major role is played by etale cohomology, but can mostly be treated from a purely formal perspective.

Here is An Introduction to Deligne-Lusztig Theory by Yoshida.
