Instructor: Dr. Peter Wolfe
Text:   Numerical Computing with MATLAB by
Cleve Moler,SIAM 2004, ISBN 0-89871-560-1 (pbk.)
Individual chapters can be downloaded from the web here . The chapters you
will need to download are: Preface, Introduction to MATLAB, Linear
equations, Interpolation, Zeros and roots, Least squares, Quadrature
and Ordinary differential equations. In addition you will want to
download the NCM files from the website.
Additional reference:   Introduction to Scientific Computing, 2nd Ed. by Van Loan. This book has a lot of good stuff about MATLAB, e.g. how to format your output neatly. A copy is on reserve at the ESPL .
Syllabus:   We will cover all or parts of the chapters
listed above.
Tutoring: The Mathematics Department provides a free tutoring service. The tutor for MATLAB is Mr.David Shaw. He will be in MATH 0203 (Owl Lab) daily 12:30-2:30 p.m through July 11. The tutor for AMSC\CMSC 460 is Mr. Rongrong Wang. He will be in MATH 0405 daily 12:30-2:30 p.m. through July 11.
Course Objectives:   The goals of the course are to introduce the student to some fundamental concepts of numerical analysis and the intellegent use of software to solve problems which may arise in mathematics, science and engineering. The course will be about 50% theory and 50% programming.
Exams and Assignments:   There will a midterm exam on or about July 3, 6 assignments to be handed in and a final exam on July 25.
The midterm exam will be on Tuesday, July 1 in MTH 0409 (one flight down from the regular classroom). On Monday June 30 we will go over the sample exam.
The final on Friday July 25 will be in MTH 0201
Programming:   Programming will be done in. MATLAB. Students should also have a good scientific calculator for use on homework and exams.
Introduction to MATLAB: Here is a short introduction to MATLAB
that can be downloaded in either pdf or postscript format

postscript . Click here for pdf .
Grading:   20% midterm, 50% assignments, 30% final exam.
