ABSTRACT : It seems to be the appropriate time to address questions that arise after the written exams: How to pick an area of research and an advisor to go along with it, what to keep in mind for preparing for the oral exams and which courses (if any?) to take.
Congratulations to UMCP's Misha Kilmer! She was selected as one of three co-winners of the 1997 SIAM Student Paper Prize for her paper, ``Cauchy-like Preconditioners for 2-Dimensional Ill-Posed Problems". She presented her work at a special minisymposium at the SIAM Annual Meeting in Stanford, CA on July 14, and received her award: a certificate plus $750.

We plan on having WIM lunches at least once a month. If you are interested in attending these lunches please e-mail WIM at wim@math.umd.edu with the days of the week that you would prefer these lunches be held. The lunches usually last from 12-1.
