WIM Graduate Student Seminar

WHEN : MONDAY, December 1, at 4pm
WHERE : Room 2300, Department of Mathematics
TOPIC : "Cayley Graphs and Infinite Groups"
SPEAKER : Susan Garille ABSTRACT : The concept of infinity has boggled the minds of mathematicians for years. The world of group theory is not exempt from this frustration. Infinite groups are difficult to work with. It would be nice if something about them were finite. This talk introduces the definitions and other tools that we will need to determine whether particular subgroups of finitely generated infinite groups are themselves finitely generated. An existing algorithm that implements these ideas is also discussed.

This will be the last WIM event of the semester.

WIM in the Spring

TALKS: This semester the default talk time was at 4pm on Wednesdays. Are there people for whom this time does not work next semester? Please e-mail your suggestions for talk times to wim@math.umd.edu. LUNCHES: The plan is to make a lunch schedule for next semester. By now our spring schedules should be shaping up. Please let me know (via e-mail: wim@math.umd.edu) which days of the week are good for lunch.
