WIM Graduate Student Seminar
WHEN : Wednesday, October 21, at 4 p.m.
WHERE : Room 1310, Department of Mathematics
TITLE : TBA
SPEAKER : Virginie Charette
ALL GRADUATE STUDENTS ARE WELCOME!!
Ruth Auerbach gave the first WIM talk of the semester. From Ruth we learned
about security in non-hierarchical computer systems (the result of her experience this summer in Minnesota). Most recently, Sherry Scott spoke about random processes and wavelets. We want to thank both speakers for giving clear, interesting talks understandable even to those of us with no knowledge of the respective topics. Other women scheduled to talk this semester include Carrie Essex Torcaso (on November 4th) and Rhonda Datcher (on December 2nd). Would you like to join them? We're still looking for a speaker for November 18th, and cookie providers for all three dates. Get in touch with Beth Arnold (eaa@math.umd.edu) to volunteer.
WIM Brown Bag Lunches
The next lunch will be at noon in room 2400.
We are experimenting with lunch days & times this semester to accomodate busy schedules. If you have a preference, please email us (wim@math.umd.edu) with day/time suggestions.

What We're Reading Now
Lifting a Ton of Feathers: A Woman's Guide to Surviving in the
Academic World by Paula J. Caplan (University of Toronto Press, 1993)
Conceived as a "guidebook for aspiring women academics",
the book includes a section specifically for graduate students.
What is Mathematics?: An Elementary Approach to Ideas and Methods by
Richard Courant, Herbert Robbins, & Ian Stewart
(2nd. ed., Oxford University Press, 1996)
This classic, fun-to-read book has been updated by Ian Stewart
to include sections on Fermat's last theorem
and the four color problem.
Read any good books lately? If you have something you'd like to suggest, please let us know! (wim@math.umd.edu)
