WIM Graduate Student Seminar
Thanks to all of our speakers this semester: Ruth Auerbach, Virginie Charette,
Rhonda Datcher, Sherry Scott, Sarah Standard, and
Carrie Essex Torcaso.
We are now looking for women to give talks in the spring. In addition to the
regular seminar talks, we will present a panel discussion on
"How to find an Advisor" (for which more panelists are needed).
If you'd like to participate, get in touch with
Ruth Auerbach (rauerb@math.umd.edu)
or Beth Arnold (eaa@math.umd.edu)
to volunteer.
Appeals for Books
Two letters recently appeared in our mailbox. If you have any books that fill
either need, please get in touch with the appropriate party:
- The University of Science and Technology in Ghana is in serious need
for textbooks for their undergraduate and graduate programs. They basically
teach courses without books because they cannot afford them. We are appealing
to you to donate a textbook to help the education program in the above
university.
We particularly need copies of "Calculus and its Applications" by
Goldstein, Lay, and Schneider, any edition. We have about 70 used copies
but we would like to send 120 so each student can borrow one from their
Math Department.
If you have a textbook (or books) that you wish to donate, you may
send an email to : rjackson@math.umd.edu for collection.
We cannot accept all books because the costs of sending them are
beyond our limited funds.
For additional information that I cannot give, feel free to contact
Prof. James Yorke, yorke@ipst.umd.edu
Sincerely,
Roselyn Abbiw-Jackson.
- I am a sixth grade teacher in a private, independent school in
Bettendorf, Iowa . I am trying to create a bibliography of American
Women in History for each area of the curriculum. I am having trouble
finding books in print about women mathematicians on a reading level
for students in grades 4-8. They may be nonfiction, historical fiction,
or biographies. If you know of any resources, I would appreciate your
help.
Thank you.
