WIM Graduate Student Seminar
Thanks again to our speakers from last semester: Lia Vas, Beth Arnold, and Yvonne Shashoua. Lia spoke on L^2 Betti numbers, Beth on lucky primes, and Yvonne on quantifier elimination. We also appreciate the advice on choosing an advisor given by our faculty panel of Robert Pego, Dan Rudolph, Jonathan Rosenberg, and Grace Yang. For information on the book recommended by Dr. Pego, see the bookshelf.
The talks for this semester are scheduled for 4 p.m. on alternate Wednesdays, staring on February 16, in room 1310 of the Mathematics building. Speakers will include Cathy Jones, Karen Ball, and Alden Moylan. If you would like to speak, please contact Ruth Auerbach (rauerb@math.umd.edu).
WIM Brown Bag Lunches
The next lunch will be from 12 to 1 p.m. in room 2400.
These brown bag lunches are a time for women in the math department to get to know one another and chat in an informal setting.

What We're Reading Now
A Ph.D. is Not Enough by Peter J. Feibelman
(Addison Wesley, 1983)
This book was recommended by Dr. Pego during the panel on "How to Choose an
Advisor" sponsored by WIM last semester. If you are interested and have trouble locating the book, stop by the MAPL office and Dr. Pego will probably let you borrow it.
Read any good books lately? If you have something you'd like to suggest,
please let us know! You can send author, title, and publisher information to
ktb@math.umd.edu so the editor
(a voracious reader) can sink her teeth into it, or you can write the
review yourself and send it to wim@math.umd.edu in whatever format is most convenient.
