WIM Graduate Student Seminar
WHEN : Wednesday, February 11, at 4pm
WHERE : Room 2400, Department of Mathematics
TOPIC : "Can you finish what you've started? - The Distance Matrix Completion Problem"
SPEAKER : Cathy Jones
ABSTRACT : This talk is based on a paper co-authored by the speaker, that appeared in Linear & Multilinear Algebra. The goal is to describe explicitly the class of partial distance matrices which admit a completion to a Euclidean distance matrix. The description is in terms of the graphs associated with the specified entries of a given matrix. This work is an extension of recent results in the positive (semi)definite completion problem to the Euclidean distance matrix case.

If you would like to give a talk or would like to bring cookies, please contact Katie Gurski or Ruth Pfeiffer.
New Website for Graduate Students in the Sciences
Geoff Davis, a member of Dartmouth College's mathematics department, recently put together a "Yahoo-like collection of career resources for graduate students and PhDs in the sciences." There is a "section on women's issues in the sciences" with which I have agreed to help. Check out this new site at
http://www.phds.org.
WIM in the Spring
We plan on having WIM lunches again this semester. For those interested in attending, please e-mail wim indicating which days are best for you.
Any ideas for WIM for this semester? Would we like to reach out to the undergraduate math majors at Maryland? Would we like to invite an outside speaker? Please e-mail wim with comments on these suggestions or to provide ideas of your own.
