WIM Graduate Student Seminar Update
Thank you to Karen Ball, who gave an interesting talk on error
correcting codes in February, and Monica Jackson, Sherry Scott, and Kim Weems,
who served on the "How to Find an Advisor" panel. The faculty surveys which
we collected as part of that discussion can be found in a binder on Anita's
bookshelf (in the Math graduate office--just ask her for it).
On April 14th, Elizabeth Williams (of the Center for Computing Sciences--formerly known as the Supercomputing Research Center) will give a talk at 4 p.m.
in room 1310 of the Mathematics building. The topic (an unclassified version of her current project for NSA) will be of interest
to computer scientists as well as mathematicians; all are welcome & there
will be cookies.
On April 28th, we will host a panel discussion on "The Job Search" at 4 p.m.
in room 1310 of the Mathematics building.
Katharine Gurski and Ravi Shankar have volunteered to serve on the panel.
If you have been participating in the job hunt too, and would like to share
your experiences, please get in touch with Ruth Auerbach
(rauerb@math.umd.edu).
WIM Brown Bag Lunches
The next lunch will be from 12:30 to 1:30 in room 2400.
We are trying to plan a picnic (sponsored by SGA). If you have ideas for the picnic, but won't be able to join us for lunch, please email to wim@math.umd.edu with your suggestions.
Industrial Mathematics Modeling Workshop
Do you want a job? Do you want your resume/cv noticed?
Take my advice- go to the 1999 Industrial Mathematics
Modeling Workshop for Graduate Students July26-
August 3 1999 at North Carolina State University. Check
out
http://www2.ncsu.edu/math/CRSC/events/99announce.html
for the announcement. The application deadline is April 15th.
Want to hear more about the problems you study at these
types of workshops? Talk to Katie Gurski who attended the
Claremont (94), NCSU (97) and IMA (98) workshops, Ruth
Auerbach who attended the IMA (98) workshop, or Ilya
Zavorine who attended the NCSU (97) workshop.

What We're Reading Now
A Study on the Status of Women Faculty in Science at MIT
(
http://web.mit.edu/fnl/women/women.html#The Study)
"This [report] describes the efforts of an extraordinary group of women
faculty in the School of Science (at MIT) to understand and ameliorate the
long-term effects of
discrimination in academia. I believe that in no case was this discrimination
conscious or
deliberate. Indeed, it was usually totally unconscious and unknowing.
Nevertheless, the effects
were and are real. Some small steps have been taken to reverse the effects
of decades of
discrimination, but we still have a great deal more to accomplish before
true equality and equal
treatment will have been achieved."--Robert J. Birgeneau, Dean of Science, from the introduction to the report's publication in the MIT faculty newsletter.
Read any good books lately? If you have something you'd like to suggest, please let us know! In particular, if you've got a favorite TeX book, please send us the title, author, publisher & a few comments for next month's newsletter.
