Women in Mathematics (WIM) Graduate Student Seminar
The WIM graduate student seminar is an opportunity for female graduate
students to get experience in giving talks, to share information about
qualifying exams, choice of an academic advisor and general issues of life
in graduate school. The talks usually run for about 20 minutes starting
at 4pm in room 1310 (unless noted otherwise) in the Department of
Mathematics at the University of Maryland, College Park. Cookies provided!
If you have questions or requests or if you want to give a talk or contribute
otherwise please send e-mail to Ruth
Auerbach.
The next talk of the fall 2000 semester will be:
Wednesday, October 4 at 4:00 pm in room 1310
title: Spatial Data Analysis
speaker: Monica Jackson
Abstract: Spatial data analysis involves data that represents
points (e.g. soil core samples) or regions (e.g. counties) and can
be regularly of irregularly spaced. The variable of interest may
be discrete or continuous. The objective of a spatial data anlaysis
is to capture the trends apparent in the data set, e.g. showing that AIDS
is less prevalent as one goes from east to west. In this talk I will present
methods and techniques that one would use to begin a spatial study.
