Stability, approximability, incompressibility, and solvability of mixed finite elements for the stationary Stokes equations

Prof. Jinshui Qin

Department of Mathematics, University of Tennessee

In this talk, we present some new results on the stability, approximability, incompressibility, and solvability of mixed finite element methods for the stationary Stokes equations. Some topics to be discussed in the talk are: techniques of stabilizing mixed finite elements via bubbles or mesh structures, elements that preserve or nearly preserve the incompressibility of incompressible fluids, some preconditioned iterative methods for solving indefinite linear systems arising from mixed finite element discretizations, etc.
