Kinetic Equations, Moment Closures, and Fluid Regimes

Professor David Levermore

University of Maryland

Abstract:  Associated with every classical kinetic equation is a hierarchy of models that provides the framework upon which one builds strategies for simulating multi-scale phenomena. These models include those valid for various fluid dynamical regimes such as the compressible Navier-Stokes system and dispersive corrections thereof. They also include transition regime models based on moment closures.  There is still much work that needs to be done to fully understand the connection between these models. For example, we will show that away from boundaries a certain Gaussian moment closure formally captures most known fluid dynamical regimes, including some not captured by the Navier-Stokes system, but the associated boundary analyzes remain open.
