Abstract:

Stochastic interacting-particle models for catalytic reaction either in 1D nanoporous systems or on 2D surfaces involve: input of reactants (adsorption), diffusive transport and reaction in the pores or on the surface; and removal of the product (desorption). If diffusion is inhibited so the system is not "well-stirred", strong spatial correlations can develop which invalidate classic mean-field treatments of reaction kinetics. We analyze the nature and consequences of such correlations for two classes of systems: narrow 1D pores inducing single-file diffusion; and crowded 2D surfaces under high-pressure conditions.
