Derivation and geometrical aspects of multiscale models of body-attitude coordination

Abstract:

In many biological systems such as flocks of birds, interacting agents can be more naturally described by their full body-orientation rather than only their velocity as in classical models of collective dynamics (for instance the Vicsek and Cucker-Smale models). The purpose of this talk is firstly to study the effect of this additional geometrical structure on the derivation of kinetic and fluid equations from a system of self-propelled particles with local alignment interaction. The second objective is to demonstrate that geometrical constraints can be the source of new complex collective behaviour phenomena which can be studied both analytically and numerically. These phenomena include phase transitions at the kinetic level and new types of pattern formation and symmetry-breaking at the fluid level.
