Lectures: 11:00am-12:15pm on Tue., Thr., in PHY 2214.

Prerequisites: MATH 240 (or MATH 461, MATH 341) and MATH 241 (or MATH 340) and MATH 246 (or MATH 341) and STAT 400

Textbook:
No textbook required. Instructure will distribute lecture notes either online or as printed out material.

Description: MATH 420 includes a presentation of selected topics in mathematical modeling. This course will develop skills in data-driven mathematical modeling through individual and group projects. Emphasis will be placed on both analytical and computational methods, and on effective oral and written presentation of results.

Assignments: Homework must be submitted on the date assigned. Individual homework must be prepared without consulting any other person. You may however consult any written reference. In this case you should cite the reference. Results taken from the reference should be (re)stated to the notation used in the course. Explanation should be given in complete English sentences. Written work must be legible and clear. Team homeworks can be submitted by a single team member, however all team members are expected to know the content of their submissions.

Projects: There are two projects in the course -- one before spring break and one after spring break. Teams will be assigned on topic for Project One in mid February, and for Project Two after spring break.

Grading:

  • 80 points: assignments (homeworks)
  • 50 points: project one
  • 75 points: project two
  • 25 points: class engagement

  • Maximum total score possible for the course is 230 points.
